Gun violence is a gruesome epidemic that permeates every part of our culture, and growing up with it can be exhausting. The percentage of gun related deaths every year in the U.S. far surpasses those of countries with similar levels of economic development. According to NPR, the United States’ rate of gun violence deaths is more than eight times the rate of Canada, and almost 100 times higher than the United Kingdom.

As if that weren’t enough, Mulaney’s new show, From Scratch, has a reputation of being ‘uncomfortably vulnerable.’ He reportedly digs into the more nitty-gritty details of relapse, intervention and rehab. Mulaney’s comedic and tragic rendition of his journey digs up some of the roots of the glamorization of drug and alcohol abuse amongst the rich and famous that are firmly ensconced in many young adults’ brains.

Though I never watched any of his shows before, John Mulaney was comforting. He is charismatic and agreeable. Cackling under the rainbow lights strung around my dorm with my roommate was one of the first times I felt UNC was the right choice.
